How to Win Friends and Influence People (Preface)

Nine Suggestions on How to Get the Most Out of This Book

I’ve had this book on my list for months now. Besides it being a timeless bestseller, it was recommended by two design creatives who attributed it to helping them succeed in their professional life.

Even if you don’t have your own business, this book can help you in many ways to lead you to success, professional or personally. So let’s get into it.

I wanted to start with the preface as it’s own post because well, it deserves it. Many books can seem overwhelming, especially self-help books, with one-thousand ways to change your habits and not knowing where to start. The preface of this book gives a beautiful list of 9 sugggestions on how to get the most out of the book.

  1. Come with a deep desire to learn and a determination to increase your ability to deal with people.
  2. Re-read each chapter. Take notes the second time.
  3. Stop frequently while reading to reflect.
  4. Highlight certain areas of importance with pencil/pen or a highlighter. If you got your book from the library (like me) or are using an audio version, highlight your notes.
  5. Reference the book often, even after reading it.
  6. Learn by doing – apply the tips in real life as often as you can.
  7. Make a game out of it with your spouse, roommate, friends, to give you accountability.
  8. Create a system to track your progress.
  9. Keep a record of your efforts.

That’s all for this one.

Stay tuned for Chapter 1!
